THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE - April 2009

We have had a very pleasant and successful Easter and the Club, despite some inclement weather, is traveling well. The course is in great shape and further renovations of greens are underway.

Member's Survey
You may already have received your survey for completion and return to the Club or, if not, it should not be long getting to you. The Board, in keeping, with the Strategic Plan is seeking your opinion on a number of issues that impact on the future of the Club. Please return your completed survey by the return enclosed envelope or by hand to the office. I cannot stress too strongly how important it is that we receive a response from a large spread of members to enable the Board to be able to base future decision's on the view of the majority.

Development
The Council has still not released their Long Jetty/ The Entrance Strategic Plan which is crucial to the recommendations the Board will be making to members. As soon as the Council releases their Plan we will inform you.

Meanwhile, we are looking at areas in the existing Clubhouse that require attention or can be improved without wasting money even though the Board is moving forward with the planning of a new Clubhouse and Maintenance Shed.

Big Thank You
We extend a very big thank you to all our staff including the Dining Staff for the tremendous effort during these difficult times. I remind members that the staff not only try to please our members but make very welcome visitors to the Club. Well done all, Bar Staff, Admin, Golf Shop and Green Staff, and our Catering Staff. A special thanks to those behind the scene who are not obvious but work hard on our behalf.

Regards to all.

John McFadden

General Manager's Report

Members

I just wanted to provide you with some information on:

The Bottom Bar:
By popular request the Bottom Bar will now operate from 11am on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday each week, Sunday will continue as normal. Initially the Board’s rationale behind reducing the hours of the Bottom Bar was the financial viability of the bar and its affect on speed of play. Please support the bottom bar by purchasing goods from the bar and not bringing your own. Please minimize your stoppage to ensure speed of play is not adversely affected. When leaving the 10th Tee please ring the buzzer to let the next group know that the tee is clear.

If the members support on these issues is not forthcoming the Board will again review the operating hours of the Bar.

Junior Development:
The club has been developing a Junior Program utilizing the guidelines produced by the Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation (JNJGF) so as to provide structure going forward. This program will include Cadets, Sub-Juniors and Juniors. It will be administered via a committee headed by Judy Swanson. The rest of the committee is made up of Geoff Leonard (Trainee Pro), Phil Saunders (Parent) and Sean Gray (Junior). Jason Hart (Director of Golf) is ex officio and reports to the Board on the progress of the program. There are also a number of volunteers that have assisted previously and will continue to do so. This program is in its infancy and will take some time to come to fruition; however, it has the full support of the Board. An overview of the program can be found in PDF Format on the clubs web site.

Trading Results:
The Club has had an excellent trading year thus far. March year to date has the club showing a profit of $174,154.04. The final three months of the year do not traditionally yield much profit, however, I am confident that we will retain the amount we have already achieved. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my team, Andrew Banning, Jason Hart, Sharyn Kennedy, Scott Walter and our staff all of whom have worked diligently toward our plan. I would also like to thank the Board for their support and guidance.

Course News

This year has seen a significant increase in course revenue which indicates more rounds of golf. This impacts turf surfaces in a negative way but due to the effort/diligence of members who repair divots and pitch marks, the course proper is and will remain in good condition. The course staff and I would like to thank the membership for their effort.

5th Hole
The 5th hole extension from a par 4 to 5 is in progress. Wyong Shire Council supported the Development Application (DA) in the year 2000 and due to the work on the 3rd, 6th and 16th holes the DA has been activated.

Due to the large scale of works, I am at present obtaining quotes from contractors for earthmoving. The project will be in combination with course staff to obtain the desired result and reduce capital outlay. The timing of the project will depend on contractor availability and meeting the details of conditions that are outlined in the DA.

Some of the details of conditions that have to be met before construction begins are;
Prepare a soil exposure and watering program.
Prepare a weed management plan.
The Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council is to be notified, and invited to supervise earthworks.
Program for the monitoring of nutrient levels entering the ground water etc.

The basic components for the construction of the 5th tee complex and surrounding areas are:

Stage1
A path extension up the left hand side of the 4th hole.
New path from the left hand side of the 4th green to the new 5th tee.
Construct new tee complex 9 metres from the boundary fence. The hole will measure 485m from the men’s championship plate (119m longer) and the Ladies championship plate will be 405m (91m longer)
Re-align fairway to the left and reshape existing tee carry as this will be fairway.

Stage 2
Install new bunker complex up the right hand side of the hole at the appropriate distance.

Drainage
On the 15th of June 2009, drainage will be installed in the wet areas on holes 1, 2, 3, 5 & 18. This project is forecasted to be completed in 5 working days weather permitted.

70mm wide slit drains are to be excavated across the fairways, 3 metres apart laser graded to drain to the main lines. A 50mm diameter agricultural pipe is laid on a PVC membrane at the base of the trenches. The pipes are then connected to the main lines (100m pipe & 150mm pipe) using special snap connectors and back-filled with river gravel and drainage sand. The new work is then connected to the existing drainage system which transports all water to the irrigation dam located at the 4th tee.

An application was lodged last year to the NSW Sport and Recreation for part funding in their Capital Assistance Program. An announcement of successful projects is expected in the coming weeks.

The capital cost of this project should pay for itself within the next 2 years, if we experience the same weather patterns over that time. This is due to less motorized cart down time on the course as well as the course closure rate will decrease.

Horticulturist/Landscaper
The retirement of Robert Shackleton resulted in a vacancy in the course maintenance staff. The new position of Horticulturist/Landscaper was created and Adrian’s start date is in May of 2009.

The key areas of this position are:
Plant and then maintain gardens around carpark and clubhouse.
Maintain existing and introduce new native areas around the course.
Implement replacement program for dead/declining trees and shrubs.
Help greenkeeping staff from time to time.

Happy golfing and I hope you enjoy the course.

Regards
Andrew Banning
Course Superintendent

Two Share 07 Pro Am Crown

Anthony Summers and David L. Partridge shot 3-under-par 68s to split the winner's cheque at the Central Coast Express Advocate & Coca-Cola $10,000 Pro Am, held Friday at Tuggerah Lakes Golf Club.

Vicki Tutt was the best-placed female competitor with a 2-over-par 73. Martin Dive, Greg Green and Edward Stedman shared third-place with 1-under-par 70s.

Open Amateur Stunner

TLGC member Stewart Creswick produced a stunning finish to overtake some of the state's best golfers and win the Tuggerah Lakes Golf Club Open Amateur individual stroke event held Saturday, 8 September, 2007.

In a spectacular inward nine, Stewart eagled the par 5 15th, then after a solid par on the 16th carded consecutive birdies on the 17th & 18th holes to post 1-under 69 and claim the coveted title from 2006 TLGC Junior Champion Dimi Papadatos who finished on 72, with Danny An of Strathfield Golf Club one stroke further back.

Stewart's outward nine had plenty of highlights as well, among them a hole-in-one at the temporary 6th hole when his approach to the 165-metre par 3 was never in doubt.

Long-time TLGC member Ron Ayton also finished well taking out the overall nett title with 71.

Woodward & Wehrle Triumph

Six-time club champion Brett Woodward (+1) and fellow A Grader Rodney Wehrle (4) proved too strong a combination against a top field in this year's Foursomes Championship, held Sunday 26 August, 2007 at Tuggerah Lakes.

Woodward and Wehrle carded 4-under-par 138 to pocket the A Grade winner's cheque and trophy with Ron Ayton and Greg Nicholas teaming well together for second. A Grade nett winners were the team of Andrew Arkins and Jason Henry, with Craig Chilvers and Jack Danswan second.

David Allomes and Jamie Armstrong won B Grade, with Michael Duggan and Anthony Duggan winning the nett trophy. Francis Gore and Hilton Cope claimed the C Grade scratch trophy, with Garry Walsh and Peter Costello (no, not that P Costello) taking out the C Grade nett title.

Top Gun Winner 07

Sean Cameron overcame a top-class field of TLGC members to claim this year's Top Gun Shootout, held Sunday 4 February, 2007.

Sean, who plays off an 11 handicap, showed nerves of steel as his opponents, including defending champion and two-time winner Ron Ayton, fell while his game went from strength to strength. Sean stormed home with birdies on 15 & 16, and a par on 17.

Jamie Power said at the start of the shootout that he would be walking up the 18th, finished second.
