THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE - April 2010

Shelly Beach Golf Club
As you may be aware the Board raised the possibility of registering and using the name “Shelly Beach Golf Club” in the member’s survey conducted last year. The result of that particular question was 62.6% agreed, 34.4% disagreed and 3% were undecided. On that basis the Board has instructed management to register the name “Shelly Beach Golf Club”. The Board discussed this issue widely over the last few months and has recently decided to action this change in conjunction with the completion of the upcoming renovation project. In order to minimize the financial impact of this change the name “Shelly Beach Golf Club” will be used when re-ordering stationery and other branded material in the lead up to completion.

Please note that this decision has not been made lightly. From a legal perspective the company name is still “Tuggerah Lakes Golf Club Limited” and we will be trading as “Shelly Beach Golf Club”.

Building Renovation Project
In the recent release of our Development Application we have had some significant and expensive DA conditions imposed upon us, particularly with respect to the car park. In order to comply with these conditions we would have had to:

# Engage Traffic Consultant to redesign Car Park for Traffic Flow purposes
# Build redesigned Car Park including Drainage
# Buy and install Storm Water Treatment System to cope with runoff from the Car Park

All this had to be designed, specified and approved by council before we could get a Construction Certificate. This issue was looking at adding $150k+ to the cost of the project as well as delaying the start date beyond our start window meaning that the 26 to 30 week project would continue over our peak trading period of November through January.

Yesterday at a meeting of the building committee it was decided that the best path forward was to submit a S.96 adjustment to remove the new Terrace out of the design. This removes the DA imposed conditions on the Car Park. Once completed it is then possible to submit another S.96 to put the Terrace back in and deal with the issue of the car park and building the terrace next year or when finances permit. In summary, we will have to complete the project as drawn in two steps.

Safety, Public Liability, Vandalism & Public Access to the Golf Course
The Board recently took the decision to permanently close the access gate adjacent to our water storage dams at Oaks Avenue. This is a result of our concerns regarding the safety of the public with respect to the two dams, particularly young children. Our next concern is for risk management as a result of this safety issue. Should members of the public be drowned, injured by golf balls or even made ill via incorrect use and/or contact with the reclaimed water supply the club is at great risk of negligence in its management of this section of the course. We have also had to deal with considerable and ongoing acts of senseless vandalism that are concentrated around the 5th Green, 17th Green, 4th Green and the more isolated areas surrounding the exit in question.

The closing of this gate has caused some backlash from local residents whom have a somewhat misplaced understanding of their rights to use our course for their own leisure. Our lease provides that we do not hinder the general public from accessing the course for any “Proper Purpose” including gaining access to any adjoining public reserve (i.e., the Beach). There still exists three road access points through the course being Waterview Street, Bonnieview Street and Shelly Beach Road. There is also the service road to North Shelly Car Park which is external to our boundary.

Financials
February trade has remained buoyant.

Profit Table

Month Actual Budget Last Year
January $26,949.10 $55,193.89 $67,533.94
February $11,250.96 ($7,503.12) $70.02

Cashflow Table (EBITDA)

YTD $437,967.51 $354,668.48 $360,516.34

Note: EBITDA = Earnings Before Interest Tax Depreciation and Amortisation. EBITDA is a widely used financial calculation. EBITDA is used to measure and compare the performance of a business without the impacts caused by financing decisions/structure, taxation issues and asset write off policies all of which can impact accounting profit. EBITDA is an approximate representation of the company’s Cash Flow.

Sub Committee Structure

At the last AGM a member requested details relating to the establishment of a dedicated Greens Committee to advise the board on matters relating to the maintenance and upgrading of the golf course.

The Board has never ceased to have such committees however TLGC operates slightly differently to many other Golf Clubs. Four General Committees are established after each AGM to advise the board on matters relating to their areas. These committees are each comprised of two Board Delegates. Each committee has the power to second additional members from time to time to provide additional views and/or expert advice. The President is an ex-officio member of each committee.

Match Committee - Permanent Members

Colin Hines (Captain)
Mike Nolan (Vice Captain)

This committee is responsible for the scheduling and conducting of all golf competitions. In addition it is responsible for the maintenance of members handicaps.
The ladies committee advises on the scheduling of all ladies competitions, oversees the running of the competitions and oversees the maintenance of ladies handicaps.
Jason Hart, as the club’s Director of Golf, has significant input to this committee.

Greens Committee - Permanent Members
Garry Craig
Bruce Cummins

This committee is responsible for the development and maintenance of the golf course and its surrounds. Reviews and recommends the implementation of, and any alterations to, the Course Master Plan.
Andrew Banning, as the club’s Course Superintendent, has significant input to this committee.

House Committee - Permanent Members
Warren Hadley
John Timmins

This committee is responsible for the maintenance of the clubhouse facilities and the activities undertaken in the clubhouse.
Sharyn Kennedy, as House Manager, works closely with this committee.

Finance Committee - Permanent Members

Jeff Chapman (Treasurer)
Alan Arkins (Vice President)

This committee is responsible for financial viability of the club. Oversight of the production of accurate management accounts as well as the annual budgeting process.

All members are encouraged to raise any concerns they may have with any of the members of the appropriate committee. Members wishing to raise any significant matters that require a formal response are requested to submit their matter in writing so that it can be tabled at a board meeting in order to prepare the formal response.

From time to time special purpose committees will be formed to advise on specific matters. Currently there is a special committee to oversee the proposed enhancements to the clubhouse.

CAPTAIN'S CORNER

A reminder that we have two big events coming up in April - our mixed foursomes over 27 holes is on Sunday 18th & bookings can be made at the Golf Shop on payment of the $25.00 entry fee. This covers your golf, prizes, and you will receive a $10 meal voucher which will be valid on that day only.

On Saturday 24th we have our annual Junior Gala Day with am & pm shotgun starts. All our juniors have been written to asking them to play; they had a nomination tear off section on their letter and we have received nominations already. Members are asked to look at playing with at least one junior where possible. After each session (during your meal) a silent auction will be held and a presentation to winners will be announced.

Members will have noticed the small sandstone wall on the left of the 4th green between the bunkers. It has been put there to stop erosion and a red line indicating that the wall is in the hazard is shown so that any players being unfortunate enough to put a ball up there can play it from where it lies or under penalty of 1 stroke take a drop as per the rules.

A couple of good scores have been made over the last few days. On Thursday 18th, Scott Cubis playing off 1 had 45 points which is 63 off the stick; a great round, Scott, keep up the good work. Not to be outdone one of our up and coming juniors Sam Rochester off 28 had 45 points also on Saturday 20th. Well done, Sam, keep the good golf going for the Gala Day.

I am continually being bombarded by members about the pace of play by some groups who don’t seem to care how far they are behind the group in front of them. The Committee has set a pace of play time of 4½ hours maximum that all players should follow. A couple of items from the Etiquette Section of the Decisions of Golf 2010 - 2011 appear below which all members should adhere to when playing.

Be Ready To Play
Players should be ready to play as soon as it is their turn to play. When playing on or near the putting green, they should leave their bags or carts in such a position as will enable quick movement off the green and towards the next tee. When the play of a hole has been completed, players should immediately leave the putting green.

Lost Ball
If a player believes his ball may be lost outside a water hazard or is out of bounds, to save time, he should play a provisional ball.
Players searching for a ball should signal the players in the group behind them to play through as soon as it becomes apparent that the ball will not easily be found. They should not search for five minutes before doing so. Having allowed the group behind to play through, they should not continue play until that group has passed and is out of range.
Good golfing to all members.

Col Hines
Captain

Golf Handicaps

It has been confirmed that the new rolling-sample calculation method for determining both the Australia Men’s Handicaps and the Australian Women’s Handicaps will be introduced as of Friday 9th April 2010. Details of how this system works have been posted on notice boards within TLGC and can be accessed via the web www.golfaustralia.org.au/newsandcommunication.
To facilitate the transfer to the new system there will be restricted access to Golf Link between 9am Wednesday 7th April and 9am Friday 9th April. Our internal system Power Golf will operate as normal during this period.
As a result of Golf Link’s restricted access the official Australian Men’s and Women’s handicaps for the period 9am 7th April until 9am on 9th April will be as shown on Golf Link and our internal system Power Golf at 8:59am on the 7th April.
Results from our competitions on Wednesday 7th April and Thursday 8th April will not be processed for handicap purposes until after 9:00am on Friday 9th of April. Adjusted handicaps should be available later on Friday 9th April.
Members should check their handicaps before playing any competition round after Friday the 9th April. It is anticipated that there will be minimal changes to most members’ handicaps as a result of the new calculation method.

Chipping Green Rules
The Board of Tuggerah Lakes Golf Club is concerned about golfers’ safety when they are practicing their putting on the practice putting green. Therefore there is a change to the rules concerning the chipping green.
1. The bunker is NOT to be used for practice and all chipping MUST be played from between the “orange” line and the green’s edge. Players MUST only chip to the nearest pin or hole.
2. A player is ONLY permitted to use the bunker and play longer chip shot under the supervision of a fully qualified Golf Coach.

TLGC Juniors <www.tlgcjuniors.com.au>
Our first 3-day camp for the year will be held 13-15 April 2010. The cost is $95. The camp will include both Juniors and Cadets. Numbers are limited, so be quick to book in with the Golf Shop — money must be paid in advance.
We have 4 new additions to our Sub Juniors squad namely - Shaun Brownlow, Dominic Cumming, Luke Riley & Tom Riley. They have joined Blayne Alexander, Sebastian Bark, Ryan Doherty, Declan Drake, Dakota Dib and Harry Egan which gives us 10 in all and provides some stiff competition between them.
Five new boys started with us in February namely, Christian Bowyer, Matthew Guyatt, Scott Hekking, Keegan Kolts and Jye Moore all are showing promise and are really keen to play.
Blayne Alexander and Kelly Densem have been attending the "Cadets on the Move" program run by the Jack Newton Foundation, and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of playing different courses.
After the Easter break the boys will be in training for their Championships which is 2 x 9 holes, the first 9 played in conjunction with the Junior Classic on 23rd May.
Our Raffles which are run once a month during Market Night are doing great and we thank Tony White for donating and all the Market Night patrons for supporting us.
Our Junior Website is going well with results posted each week for the boys to see.

COURSE REPORT

Tree trimming has continued on the south side of the course, and the old dead trees have been trimmed to allow the new natives to grow.

The new tee on the driving range is almost complete, with the final plants being planted around the tee in the next couple of days. The greens have responded well in the last couple of weeks, they almost gave a full surface of grass to those greens most affected by the humidity. The staff have been busy keeping the course cut and trimmed for all to see; this is not easy with the rate at how fast everything grows around the course.

The old 16th green is ready for play, for when the clubhouse renovations start.

That is all for my first newsletter - good golfing to all.

Joke of the Month
"The other day I broke 70. That's a lot of clubs." - Henny Youngman
"If you break 100, watch your golf. If you break 80, watch your business." - Joey Adams

Tip From the Pro
The average golfer tends to miss-hit a shot more often than they middle it, therefore I see a lot of golfers coming up short when playing iron shots to the green. Next time you play try to select a club that will get you to the back of the green if you were to hit it flush, this way most of your miss-hits will still find the front of the green. Hitting more greens will lower your scores!

Schools for Rulings
Why am I allowed to repair pitch-marks on the putting surface, but not allowed to repair spike marks?
David Rickman (R&A): That’s always been the problem. Allow people to ‘garden’, for want of a better expression, and that’s exactly what they’ll do. Another problem is, can you always tell spike marks from other imperfections? So if you allow the repair of spike marks, you’d have to allow the repair of anything.

Other concerns come back to those fundamental principles – playing the ball as it lies, and the course as you find it. If pressure were to come, it would be from the elite game, but at the moment there really isn’t any. I understand the question. But it’s a matter of degree–ball marks are bigger and more significant. Soft spikes appear to have improved the damage issue on a lot of putting surfaces, too.
