THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE - June 2008

While the weather wasn't quite as wild as the same time last year, the extensive rainfall has taken its toll on the course as well as club turnover. It just underlines how extensively our fortunes vary with the fickle factor of the weather. The one constant however has been the consistent professional response of our greens staff led by Andrew Banning. Hopefully the weather won't be a factor in our timetable for the winter renovations, commencing with the fairway area between the 6th and 16th holes.

Development Proposal Update:

The Board unanimously endorsed John Stevens and the Stevens Group as the preferred developer, in accordance with the Registered Clubs Act (1976). This same legal statute requires all members to have voting rights in the process which impacts on the change to the Clubhouse, and this includes the social membership category. As such all members will have the right to vote on the eventual motion to be developed by the Board. Please note that Social Member's voting rights do not extend beyond voting on the sale of this core asset. Social Members cannot vote in elections or on resolutions as per our constitution.

A presentation of the development proposal was made to the Mayor, Councillor's and Council Staff at the Council Chambers on Wednesday, June 4. Craig Ellis, myself and John Stevens outlined the economic position, a brief historical background, and preliminary quality assurance and architectural detail. Council response was very positive. Combined with the full support of the commercial team from the Department of Lands, the position and proposal look very promising at this point.

The possibilities will now be analysed by council planning staff, who will make a recommendation to council by the end of July, 2008. This recommendation will form the basis for future action by the Board including calling a special meeting to seek membership support to go forward. This will obviously be a critical period of time for the Club.

One of the key member concerns that came across at our information evening, held in March, was that of not wanting to sell off our only asset. This is a valid concern that requires further explanation. At present, zoned as 6a (Open Space and Recreation) our piece of land is worth approximately $500,000. The real value of our land is not available to us until an appropriate rezoning has occurred, and another willing party has paid market value for it.

The Board believes in protecting the integrity of this realized value for, and in the control of, the full playing members of this golf club. After completion of the clubhouse, all excess funds, estimated to be of the order of $5,000,000, will be invested in trust. There will be rules surrounding the management of this trust. As an example, the capital within this trust will not be accessible to spend or borrow without the permission of the members via a special resolution.

So in response to the member's key concern of losing our only asset the Board's response is that we are in fact significantly escalating the value of our land asset, realizing that value in terms of a new clubhouse and a $5m Trust Fund and ensuring that the Trust is regulated as a protected, yet usable, asset controlled by the full playing members of Tuggerah Lakes Golf Club!

The other projects that have been outlined such as a new greens maintenance shed, irrigation system upgrade, course master plan completion etc. will be undertaken on a planned basis utilizing funds from Trust interest and trading surpluses. This will ensure the ongoing development and improvement of the Tuggerah Lakes Golf Club as well as ensuring the protection and growth of our investment asset.

Open Amateur Stunner

TLGC member Stewart Creswick produced a stunning finish to overtake some of the state's best golfers and win the Tuggerah Lakes Golf Club Open Amateur individual stroke event held Saturday, 8 September, 2007.

In a spectacular inward nine, Stewart eagled the par 5 15th, then after a solid par on the 16th carded consecutive birdies on the 17th & 18th holes to post 1-under 69 and claim the coveted title from 2006 TLGC Junior Champion Dimi Papadatos who finished on 72, with Danny An of Strathfield Golf Club one stroke further back.

Stewart's outward nine had plenty of highlights as well, among them a hole-in-one at the temporary 6th hole when his approach to the 165-metre par 3 was never in doubt.

Long-time TLGC member Ron Ayton also finished well taking out the overall nett title with 71.

Woodward & Wehrle Triumph

Six-time club champion Brett Woodward (+1) and fellow A Grader Rodney Wehrle (4) proved too strong a combination against a top field in this year's Foursomes Championship, held Sunday 26 August, 2007 at Tuggerah Lakes.

Woodward and Wehrle carded 4-under-par 138 to pocket the A Grade winner's cheque and trophy with Ron Ayton and Greg Nicholas teaming well together for second. A Grade nett winners were the team of Andrew Arkins and Jason Henry, with Craig Chilvers and Jack Danswan second.

Top Gun Winner 07

Sean Cameron overcame a top-class field of TLGC members to claim this year's Top Gun Shootout, held Sunday 4 February, 2007.

Sean, who plays off an 11 handicap, showed nerves of steel as his opponents, including defending champion and two-time winner Ron Ayton, fell while his game went from strength to strength. Sean stormed home with birdies on 15 & 16, and a par on 17.

Jamie Power said at the start of the shootout that he would be walking up the 18th, finished second.
