THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE - March 2010
Members
NSW Premier’s Department
The Vice President, General Manager and I met with The Hon. David Harris MP and senior officials from the Office of the Premier and the Department of Lands to discuss whether government policy would likely enable any future acquisition of Crown Land. The purpose of this was to assist the Board in further developing the club’s strategic plan. The outcome of the meeting was that TLGC will not be able to acquire any further portions of the Crown Land area. This is useful information in that it defines with some certainty the boundaries of the club’s holdings for any future development of the freehold site. The Board is holding its annual strategic update session on March 6th.
Land adjacent to 12th Tee
The Board is also taking steps to ascertain the value and possible alternative allowable uses for our land holdings immediately adjacent to the 12th tee. This piece of land is owned by the club and is not part of the Crown Lease. It has a combined 5C and 2A zoning, contains the infrastructure of a now disused bore and has somewhat difficult street access due to the roundabout on Grandview St & Bateau Bay Rd. The club’s reclaimed water mains also cross a corner of this block. We are discussing these encumbrances with council with a view to maximizing its value into the future.
Valuation for Finance
As part of the necessary steps to gain finance to fund the club's renovation project we were obliged to get an independent valuation of our Club as a going concern. As you would appreciate our land, even our freehold portion, is zoned 6A “Open Space and Recreation” upon which sits a Registered Club, a Pro Shop, Car Park and Greens Maintenance Shed. It is not a normal saleable item for a bank to hold as security and therefore is not valued in the same fashion as either residential property or commercial business property.
The Club engaged Colliers International to undertake this valuation. This valuation is a comprehensive document that outlines the club’s assets and trading position as well as comparing us to all other like establishments on the Central Coast.
The General Manager is more than happy for members to view this document if you are interested. We can’t, however, give out copies due to the sensitive nature of some of the information so please make an appointment with Craig if you would like any further information on this valuation.
Pro Am Recognition from PGA
Our club was recently nominated for the 2009 City/Metro Pro Am of the year. Unfortunately we did not take out this coveted award however the Board is very proud of our nomination and wishes to thank our management and staff for organizing the event and in particular Jason Hart and Sharyn Kennedy.
Vandalism
Our club continues to be the victim of congregations of bored youth with significant damage caused since the turn of the year. In particular the 5th Green and surrounds appear to be the meeting place of choice. Management have been liaising with both the Police and Council in an effort to curb this nonsensical destruction of our property. We thank you for your patience.
Financials
The Club’s revenue continued to be strong throughout January, however, our expenses in certain areas have undermined this result for the first time this financial year. We have had to carry extra wages in the Golf Shop due to the changeover of trainees. We would like to wish both Geoff Leonard and Holly McDarmont the best in their future pursuit of a golf focused vocation. The club has also had significantly higher course costs than were budgeted for the month. This is due to a combination of the abovementioned vandalism, the late season heat and humidity has caused issues with our greens which subsequently and significantly increases expenditure. Finally, increased minor course construction has been necessary to accommodate the beginning of Clubhouse Renovations.
The General Manager has provided an update to the Profit and Cash Flow Table below.

CAPTAIN'S CORNER
Since my last report the Pennant Season has commenced and our 4 teams have performed admirably to date. After the round on Sunday 21st our ‘A’ grade team is in 2nd spot 4 games behind Wyong, the Juniors are also in 2nd spot 2 games behind Wyong, they play each other this weekend at Kooindah Waters. Wyong and ourselves are equal in the Sterland Shield 42 games each so Sundays round will determine not only who will proceed to the final on 14th March but also the Sterland Shield is up for grabs. Our ‘B’ grade side have a bye this weekend but they have already won division 2 and will be in the final on 14th March, unfortunately our ‘C’ grade will not be progressing any further and they are currently 3rd.
As you would be aware vandals have been giving the 5th green a work over, it is a credit to Andrew and his staff in the way they have been quickly onto carrying out repairs with very little inconvenience to our members.
Our resident ‘garden guru’ Adrian Katona has been very busy during the month, the garden on the right had side of the 6th has been completed and all the area now is a real picture. Whilst Adrian gets the new shrubs to grow the whole area is a Compulsory Drop and you must use the nearest designated drop zone not nearer the pin, there are 3 designated zones. The new ‘temporary 9th hole’ is well under way, once it is in use you will play to the 8th then proceed to the 10th then after playing the 16th you will then play the 9th. There may be a change to this in approximately 6 months.
Whilst our greens staff keep our fairways and greens in top condition there are a lot of fairway divots and plug marks on the greens not being filled or repaired and we seek the assistance of players in carrying a sand bucket and filling divots and repairing plug marks on the green.
The new handicap system comes into operation at 9am on the 9th April 2010, a copy of the workings of your new handicap is on display at the golf shop and in the club house. Course ratings will not at this stage be finalized until the end of 2010.
Rules Corner
Lifting, Dropping & Placing the Ball (Rule 20)
* Before lifting a ball that has to be replaced (eg when the ball is lifted on the putting green to clean it, the position of the ball must be marked) (Rule 20-1).
* When the ball is being lifted in order to drop or place it in another position (eg dropping within two club lengths under the unplayable ball rule) it is not mandatory to mark its position although it is recommended that you do so.
* When dropping, stand upright, hold the ball at shoulder height and arms length and drop it.
* A dropped ball must be re-dropped if it rolls to a position where there is interference from the condition from which free relief is being taken (eg an immovable obstruction) if it comes to rest more that two club-lengths from where it was dropped, or if it comes to rest nearer the hole than its original position, the nearest point of relief or where the ball last crossed the margin of a water hazard. There are nine situations in total when a dropped ball must be re-dropped and they are covered in Rule 20-2c. If a ball dropped for a second time rolls into any of these positions, place it where it first struck the course when re-dropped (Rule 20-2c). Good golfing until the next Pin High.

MOANERS NEWS
Saturday 20th February 2010 saw the culmination of yet another great year for the Moaners. The Presentation night was attended by 120 members and partners who were provided with great food, drink and entertainment. There were numerous awards throughout the night for the winners of various events however the most notable presentation was made by Bruce Wilson and Craig Gaunt to the notorious Moaner Geoff Hunter. His deeds on that memorable last day of the Club Championships have now been immortalised forever. If any member would like to be remembered of Geoff’s heroics on that final day – just visit the bottom bar and look above the Moaners Scoreboard or listen to the latest updates from Ray Hadley on radio.
The Moaners would like to thank all Staff and the Catering Staff for their assistance on Saturday night.
Moaners don’t forget that the AGM will be held in the bottom bar commencing at 6.30pm sharp on Monday March 8 2010. Any Moaner who is not financial by the start of the meeting will relinquish their membership rights to the Moaners – so don’t forget to pay your membership prior to the day. Moaners please turn up to the AGM and have a say in the upcoming year – remember it is your Club and your voice is important.
Moaners are also reminded to keep themselves conversant with the ongoing updates for the extensions to the Club and are invited to attend an Information Session to be held on Monday 15th March 2010 at 6.30pm. This session will be conducted by representatives from the Contractor and will be an information session only. It will not be a question and answer forum. However it will give a good insight into what is going to result from the extensions. If anyone has questions after this night they can direct them to Craig Ellis during office hours.
The next major event for the Moaners is Corporate Day which will be held on Sunday May 16th 2010 and also note that there is no play on Sunday May 23rd 2010. However 40 spots have been booked at the Maitland Golf Course for this day so get your names in early if you wish to play.

COURSE REPORT
As stated in a previous newsletter, the turf on the putting green has been removed and transplanted on the temporary 9th green. The remaining turf was layed at the new nursery site behind the 8th tee as well as plugging miscellaneous areas on greens due to bird damage and vandalism. The putting green site will be mulched and planted with native plants and grasses until the clubhouse balcony is constructed.
The temporary 9th tee on the practise fairway will be laser leveled on Tuesday the 2nd of March and Windsor Green Couch turf will then be layed the following day. Native shrubs and grasses will then be planted around the East, South and West sides of the tee.
The re-claimed water pipe that feeds into the 4th dam has been re-directed on the eastern side of the dam. Large rocks have been positioned in place for the water to cascade over and then run into the dam. The surrounding area will be planted with appropriate shrubs and grasses.
The months of January and February have been warm with a very high humidity level. Due to these weather conditions, some of the greens have been affected with the fungaldisease called Anthrac nose. To combat this disease, a two pronged approach of chemical and cultural practices has been utilized. The greens are improving and combined with the humidity decreasing over the next couple of weeks, the greens will improve further. Most golf clubs that have Wintergrass greens are experiencing the same difficulties.

Joke of the Month
Two dim-witted golfers are teeing off on a foggy par-3. They can see the flag, but not the green. The first golfer hits his ball into the fog and the second golfer does the same. They proceed to the green to find their balls.
One ball is about 6 feet from the cup while the other found it’s way into the cup for a hole-in-one. Both were playing the same type of balls, TopFlite 2, and couldn’t determine which ball was which. They decided to ask the golf pro to decide their fate. After congratulating both golfers on their fine shots, the golf pro asks, "Which one of you used the orange one?"
Tip from the Pro
Are you struggling with your contact when using your driver? TRY THIS!!!!
• Place 2 tees in the ground 15cm apart along the intended target line.
• Line up the rear tee with your left toe and practice swinging the driver clipping the top of both tees.
This will help flatten out the bottom of your swing and improving your contact. Only thing to do now is to watch it fly!
